No-Fee Scotia Moneyback® Visa* Card offers a combination that one rarely sees – there is no annual fee, and you get up to 1 percent cash back on purchases charged to the card. The minimum credit limit is $500, and the minimum interest-free grace period is 21 days. The interest rate per annum is set at 19.50 percent on purchases and 21.50 percent on cash advances and balance transfers.

More important, a quick overview of the card’s money back program shows that clients get 0.25 percent back on the first $1,500 they spend, 0.50 percent on the next $1,500 and 1 percent on any amount above that. The sums indicated are net annual purchases. If you apply for the no-fee Moneyback Visa online and get one issued before October 31, 2010, you will get the lucrative interest rate of 7.99 percent on purchases during the first six months. Purchase returns, cash advances, service charges, and other fees and payments are not subject to reward.

Clients between 18 and 54 years of age can choose to insure their credit card balance for up to $20,000, payable in a number of distinct circumstances – if death or disability occurs, a health crisis is diagnosed, or the holder loses his/ her job involuntarily. The monthly premiums are exceptionally low; so, keep in mind that this option can be quite beneficial. In addition, free supplementary cards are available to holders of the no-fee Scotia Moneyback card.

The fee on dishonored payments and non-sufficient funds is $35. There is a $20 overlimit fee, a $10 inactive fee, and $2.50 cash advance counter fee at any financial establishment in Canada. The inactive fee applies if there have been no debit or credit transactions on your account for a period of twelve consecutive months.

Other fees include: $2.00 cash advance fee for Scotiabank ATMs in Canada and $2.50 for non-Scotiabank ATMs in Canada. For handling of foreign currency, the fee is 2.5 percent of the converted amount. The fee for withdrawing money from a bank outside Canada or from an ATM outside Canada is $5 in both cases.
